Personal Review

★ ★ ★ ★ ★
My second Riley Sager book — and an easy five-star read for spooky October! 🎃
After reading The Only One Left, I picked up Home Before Dark, and this one won me over easily. I enjoyed the horror aspect more than I did in my previous Riley Sager read. The creepy atmosphere, the way the storyline was handled, and the gradual reveal of the twists all worked really well for me.

The pacing was a major highlight. The story kept pulling me forward, and I ended up finishing the whole book in just three days. I loved how the pieces came together and how the revelations kept changing the way I looked at the story.
My biggest lingering question: is Baneberry Hall actually haunted, or is there another explanation? 👀

I'm still not entirely sure what to believe about Baneberry Hall, and I like that the question stayed with me after I finished the book. That uncertainty adds to the creepy appeal of the story.

I could also understand why Maggie's parents acted the way they did. When they believed Maggie might have been responsible for Petra's death, their instinct to protect their child kicked in. It doesn't necessarily make every decision easy to justify, but that parental-protection angle made their actions understandable to me.

Overall, I really enjoyed the way the storyline unfolded and the way the twists were revealed. Compared with The Only One Left, this had the stronger horror atmosphere for me, and its pacing made it hard to put down.
Would I spend a night at Baneberry Hall?
Yes! I might be scared, but I'd still stay for a night. I always think hell is other people — so perhaps a supposedly haunted house would be worth investigating. 😂👻

A gripping, creepy, twisty five-star read that I finished in three days.
The perfect kind of read for a spooky October. 🎃📚

Note: This review mentions some plot details. Read the book first if you'd like to go in completely blind.
